Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)
Ashwagandha (also known as winter cherry) is native to India, Northern Africa and the Middle East. For thousands of years, the root of this small, evergreen shrub has been used in Ayurveda (Indian Natural Healing) to relieve stress, improve focus and boost energy levels.
Ashwagandha is a natural adaptogen. As such, it protects the body from stressors, boosts energy levels by day and relaxes the body for restful sleep at night. Several studies have shown that this herb reduces symptoms of stress and anxiety. One 60-day study of 64 people with chronic stress showed a 69% average reduction in anxiety and insomnia scores, compared to only 11% in the placebo group. While research on severe depression is limited, results suggest ashwagandha may be helpful in this condition, too.
Ashwagandha is available in capsule form and should be used for 2-6 weeks for the benefits to be noticed. 500 mg dried plant material can be taken daily as a minimum dosage, but up to 6 g can safely be used, as the herb has very few side effects.
