Barley Tea

Barley Tea

Barley tea (Hordeum vulgare) has been brewed since at least the 8th century in China, Korea and Japan. Commonly known as Mugi-cha to the locals, it is a roasted-grain based infusion made from Barley. Nowadays it is commonly available and used for many things like treating flu or losing weight.

The tea releases feel-good hormones, which refresh soul and mind. It helps keep anxiety, depression and stress away, while relaxing the brain and muscles. An amino acid in Barley called tryptophan is known to help relax the body, thus getting a good night’s sleep. A 2013 Malaysian study showed that talbinah, a type of barley tea used by Muslims, had a statistically significant benefit on depression, stress and mood disturbances in elderly patients.

Barley tea can be enjoyed hot or cold. In Korea, it often replaces water in restaurants, while in Japan it is a popular summer refreshment.
